She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on June 20th, 1967 and spent some early years living in Washington D.C.. Her father was a cancer researcher who worked out of Washington for a time, concentrating on breast cancer research. For the greater part of her life, Nicole was raised in Australia. Her mother was a very liberal feminist who believed in strong and forthright political identities. As a child, Nicole was often given the task of distributing leaflets and pamphlets for various causes. In addition, she was not allowed Barbie dolls or anything else which her mother thought to be offensive to the feminist cause. Still, Nicole says she did manage to get her hands on one of the coveted dolls and treasured it. Each night at dinner, Nicole and her younger sister were expected to be able to debate a current issue with their parents. They grew up in a household where both physical and intellectual exercise were the norm. Although Nicole is one of Hollywood’s most attractive leading ladies, it wasn’t always that way. Unfortunately for her, her impressive height came before anything else filled in, and she spent her high school years as a tall, awkward and gangly child with an unruly mass of red hair. Shy because of her looks, she found solace in the drama department, where she could pretend she to be someone else. Nicole also began performing outside of school in different plays in Sydney’s Philip Street Theater.
